Mr Chamberlain.

ARRIVAL IN LONDON.

Mr and Mrs Chamberlain and party have arrived at Southampton, The JEarl of Selborne, First Lord of the Admiralty, with a deputation from Birmingham, boarded the steamer Norman at 7 o’clock in the morning, and welcomed them. After Mr Chamberlain’s reply, which included a high tribute to Mrs Chamberlain, the Mayor and Corporation escorted them to Hartley Hall, where an address from the Southampton Corporation was presented in the presence of twelve hundred people. Mr Chamberlain’s first words in replying were : —“ I warn you in your appreciation of my work not to over-estimate the results actually achieved. We cannot in the twinkling of an eye undo a long record of vacillation and weakness. We may, however, readily accept the assurances of the Boer and Dutch leaders that they accept the new situation." Mr Balfour (Prime Mimister), Lord Roberts (Commander-in-Chief) the Duke of Devonshire (Lord President of the Council), Lord Strathcona (High Commissioner in London for the Canadian Dominion), the Agents - General of the various colonies, and three hundred notabilities welcomed Mr and Mrs Chamberlain at Waterloo Station.

Though the route through the streets was kept secret, at Mr Chamberlain’s request, they had a great reception at the hands of the crowds—chiefly working men and women —at Westminster Bridge and Princess Gate,
