Sixteen Years’ Courtship.
£6OO DAMAGES IN A BREACH OF PROMISE CASE. A breach of promise case was heard last week at Leeds before the Undersheriff.—The plaintiff was Miss Alice Emma Tuke, 85, of Belvedere, Bridlington, and defendant Mr John Winn, 87, son ot Mr T. Winn, architect, of. Leeds. The courtship dated from 16 years back, when plaintiff waa attending an art school in Leeds. Presents had been exchanged, and Miss Tuke had received from defendant two engagement rings. On June 18, 1892, defendant wrote:—“My own darling Alice,—Alice darling, I often picture to myself how comfortable we should be together, love; and how nice it would be coming home every night and having you to meet, darling, at tbs door, and then in having tea and sitting down in our own house, where nobody would say anything or interfere with us, love. Oh, Alice, darling, what a grand feeling it must be to have a homo of our owu, and do ae we like, mustn’t it, pat?” Many other letters were written in a similar strain, but in 1901, it was alleged, he gradually grew cooler, and on Jan. 28 of that year plaintiff wrote to him in these terms: —“1 was a light-hearted girl when you first knew me, but what have you made me ? Jack, love, I can’t stand it. I shall have to go away if you don’t come, and may God forgive me.” An amicable settlement was agreed to, plaintiff to receive £6OO.
