South Africa.
As the result of discussion with leading citizens at Johannesburg and Mr Chamberlain, an agreement has been arrived at for an Imperial guaranteed public works loan of thirty million pounds and for the Wait contribution to be fixed at thirty millions.
An understanding was also reached do the labour question. The Times heartily congratulates Mr Chamberlain upon having arranged a voluntary war contribution. The Standard says that if the settlement is somewhat indulgent to the Rand, yet it will in the long run prove advantageous to the highest Imperial interests in South Africa. The Rand, adds the Standard, has shown its wisdom and its patriotism in the matter.
