Mr Chamberlain at Petoria.
Mr Chamberlain, replying toXa. deputation at Pretoria, said, if desired, the visit of Imperial Ministers would be repeated He was sure they would feel it their.duty, equally With their pleasure, to make his visit so successful as td tempt his successors to repeat it. If he were sent back empty-handed he would bow to their decision, but in that case it was unlikely that the visit would be promptly repeated. In the course of a speech at a banquet, Mr Chamberlain expressed the hope that Pretoria would remain *the capital of the Transvaal. Generals Schalk Barger, • Smits and Botha, and many country Dutch burghers were present. Replying to a suggestion for the acceleration of further representative government, Mr Chamberlain said it was embarrassing to raise a controversial question prematurely, and advised patience, allowing time for the study of the various problems. The Pretoria correspondent of The Times says that the Boers’ aloofness on Mr - Chamberlain’s arrival was due to doubt as to their leader’s attitude. The disposition now is to acquiesce in the status quo and to show passive loyalty.
