MARTIAL LAW REPEALED
Martial law has been repealed in the Orange River Colony, and sn ordinance similar to that issued in the Transvaal substituted. RAND SHARES.
There has been an unexplained large drop in Rand shares, The newspapers regard this as notable on 'the eve of Mr Chamberlain’s departure. POLITICS AT THE CAPE. The Progressive party in the Cape Parliament has adopted a platform. It includes the maintenance of the British settlement of the war, removal of fiscal barriers, reform of taxation, fair, representation, and extensive public works. The Cape Assembly has been prorogued till 15th January. As a result of the defeat of the Government over the election of a Speaker, the Natal Parliament has been dissolved. DROUGHT IN THE YRYBURG DISTRICT.
Owing to the severe drought in the Yryburg district, several farmers have returned to burgher refuge camps.
