Demented Vagrants.

Two thousand Doukhobors—members of the Russian Puritan sect who have settled in large numbers in Canada—have reached Yorkton, in the Aasiniboia district, in a wretchedly emaciated conditions.

The women and children have suffered greatly from the cold, and have lived chiefly on berries, refusing to eat meat or to wear woollen clothes, and a number of children have died.

The fanatics of the sect profess to be seeking the “promised land,” where they expect to meet the Saviour. The Canadian Government is greatly puzzled as to how to treat the movement, but for the present it has compelled the women and children to seek shelter and accept rations.

The men sleep in the buah, frequently praying for Divine direction*

I The Doukhobora obstinately peril sisfc in marching to Winnipeg, | declaring that it is “ their duty to Ij Christianise the world.” The womeil I are anxious to return home.
