Damage to a Meat Cargo.
A London correspondent writes under date, Sept. 4th, as followaj-r-------“An accident, at present nicx* plained, happened to the s.s. Niwaru, of the Tyser line, while on her voy*. age to London from New Zealand and Australia. On opening her No. 2. hold for the purpose of discharging her, it was found that the wafer bad entered it to such ah extent that a very considerable quantity of the cargo of frozen meat had been damaged, so much so, in fact, that the vessel was ordered out to sea by the health authorities hero for tbp purpose of throwing a portion of the cargo overboard. All the meat concerned was shipped at Wellington. It is surmised that the vessel, while bn her voyage, either started a plate
t« collided with some submerged obstacle unnoticed by those on board, but until the Teasel returns and ia dry-docked, it is not possible to say what caused the accident. It is understood that the cargo was insured, bat the extent o! the damage cannot yet be estimated, for the Niwaru has not yet returned to port. It is considered likely that the gale of last Wednesday and Thursday delayed the jettisoning of the cargo, a small portion of which was shipped by the Gear Company, of Wellington. 1 hear that by far the larger quantity eame originally from Napier, whence it was consigned to the 0.0. and D. Company. In all, about 650 tons of meat hare been destroyed.”
