Width of Tyres.
Messrs Kendrick, Coley, Lampp and Wilson, carters, waited on the Baagitikei Council and protested against the imposition of the high license fee, proposed on carts in the »«w by-laws, oh the ground that it was excessive, that it was imposed only on certain carters, those carrying gravel; wool, grain going free, also milk carts, which did much damage to roads; and that carting could only be done about seven months during the year eh some roads.
The Chairman pointed out that carters were not generally ratepayers and the tax was the only means to get them to pay any part of the cost or maintenance of the roads. He admitted that a suggestion of the deputation of charging a fee according to some slidihg scale had much to recommend it.
The'deputation said tyres of 4, 5 and six inches in diameter were alright, but a 9 inch tyre was not practicable on unmetalled roads, 'Tyres of 2} inches -bearing heavy loads should not be allowed on metalled roads.
The deputation was told that the suggestions made would be considered,
