Fighting at Hayti.

The gunboat Crete A. Pierrot, belonging to General Feriuin, the leader of the rebellion in Hayti, seized the German steamer Markomamua at the entrance to Port Haytien, on the north coast, confiscating arms and ammunition which were aboard.

Considering the act to be on* of piracy, the German cruiser Panther sank the gunboat off Gonaives. New York accounts say that the crew of the gunboat were saved, but a Capa Haytien cable says they were drowned.

Prior to the Panther’s action, the authorities at Washington showed little disposition to deal with the question of the gunboat and act an if the seizure was within the territorial limit. ' The commander of the German cruiser. Panther ordered Admiral Killick to remove the crew and surrender the Hayfcian rebel gunboat Crete a Pierrot in five minutes, for 7 its action in seising a Gorman steamer and confiscating arms and ammunition which were aboard. Afterwards he extended the time to fifteen minutes, on condition that the arms and ammunition were abandoned.

The crew disembarked in great disorder.

The Panther’s boarding detachment discovered that the gunboat was on fire. The Panther then sank her with thirty shots.
