PRESENTATION.

A very pleasant function was held last night at the Masonic Hall when the officers and men of the Foxton Volunteers entertained Captain Mounaey, of the Palmerston North Rifles, at a smoke concert to celebrate his wedding. The attendance was large and a very pleasant evening was spent in songs and recitations. The real object of the gathering was to testify the kindly feelings felt by the volunteers for the gratuitous assistance rendered by Captain Mounsey at the early start of the company, as he, in the dearth of drill instructors frequently came down from Palmerston and instructed the men, to such an advantage, that by extra drills the company secured capitation within four months, thus making a substantial increase of £IBO to the funds.

Daring the evening Captain Walsh, in a nice speech, referred to the assistance Captain Mounsey had rendered and asked him to accept from the officers, as a memento of his connection with them and to mark his wedding, a handsome silver gong, inscribed “Presented to Captain Mounsey by Captain Walsh and Lieut. Baker of the Foxton Rifles on

the occasion of his marriage.” Sergeant Mitchell on behalf of the non-commissioned officers and men handed Captain Mounsey, as a me- | 1 men to of the . difference that bad

Captain Mounsey said he hardly knew what to say having been taken so much by surprise, but he thanked them ■ heartily for their handsome presents. Ho mentioned that owing to the press of his business he had intended to resign from volunteering, ■ but'the kind appreciation of his efforts ■ as shown this evening had determined him to stick to it. During the evening songs were contributed by Privates Glover, W. Hooker, W. Nye and Mcßriety, and recitations by Lieut. Jonson and Private Saunders. Refreshments were provided by Mr M. Porreau.
