Sir George White has stated that he endorsed General French's recommendation of Lieut,—General (then Colonel) Sir lan Hamilton for the Victoria Cross at the battle of Elandslaagte early in the war, but the authorities ruled that Colonel' Hamilton was too senior an officer to be granted the decoration.
