Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 1902.
Messrs Abraham & Williams hold stock sales at Palmerston on Thursday and Levin on Friday. Mr E. A. Coley gives notice that he will not be responsible for debts contracted by his wife. Mr W. Wakefield gives notice that he will not be responsible for debts contracted without his written authority. On Friday morning, in our extra, we announce the death of Constable Kidd at Palmerston who was found dead, from a bullet wound in his head, at the police barracks. To account for the act, which bore the appearance of a self-inflicted wound, there is no doubt the deceased was suffering from some disorder which is not made clear, as for the last months he seemed in very subdued spirits and believed he was not in good health, The adjourned inquest may throw some further light on what appears to have been an extraordinary act, but we believe everything will point to his mind having been unhinged from true or fancied trouble.
Sufferers from rheumatic pains will do well to try Bock's Rheumatic Powder. By removing the uric acid from the system it is permanent in its effects, and may be guranteed by the local agents Thos. Westwood and Co and M. H. Walker. Bock’s Cough Balsam has stood the Public test with whom we hear it is a favourite as a cure for colds, cough, asthma and bronchitis.
The Returning Officer notifies that an election for a councillor in the room of Mr Purcell, who has resigned, will he held on Friday August 39, and the nominations must be made by noon of the rSth of August. Mr Hack worth, the stock inspector is now in Foxton, and will be glad to give anyone a lesson in mixing pollard poison. 9 Tenders for building a house for Mr F. Hudson close on Thursday afternoon next. We have pleasure in congratulating Miss-Grace Wauklyn on her rapid and well-deserved promotion to the position of assistant teacher in the local school. As it is but a very short time ago since she received notification ot having passed her final P.T. examination, her promotion to the position of assistant so soon is all the more creditable to herself as well as to the head teacher, under whose care she has attained such high teaching proficiency as to fully warrant her appointment. Mr P. Hennessy invites the inhabitants to join with him in meeting Mr MacDermott to say “good-bye” to him. Some of the shops illuminated last night and Messrs Westwood & Co. intend to do so again to-night. Mr Edward Monseley, pupil teacher, entered on his new duties in the Foxton school yesterday. We understand that he comes highly recommended by the head teacher of the College-street school, Palmerston, from which he has been transferred. The last dance of the Coronation festivities takes place to-night and bids to be a record attendance. The committee have left no effort unused to secure a successful and enjoyable evening. Refreshments will be provided and handed round after the first part of the programme is concluded. The Cornwall family will supply the music. A lamp, so much needed, will be provided for visitors to make their way dry shod. The sub committee for the evening are Messrs Fraser, Gower and W. Cook- Programmes will be issued atter the first danceSAN DEI! ami SONS BUG \LPiT; EX TRACT.
