Manawatu County Council.
The ordinary meeting of the above was held at Sanson on Wednesday. Present —Crs Hammond (in the chair), McLennan, Masters, Robinson, and Carter.
CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and dealt with : From Treasury, 'stating that loan of £9OO additional Tram Loan was now available. From H. Claris (Foxton), asking payment of £l9 2s 6d for an acre taken for Elkins-Motniti road deviation.
From W. Hunter, objecting to soli land for gravel pit, but Council could obtain metal along the road face if satisfactory arrangements were made With him. In a further letter Mr Hunter refused to soil at price, and also asserted that the /Council had broken their agreement with him.
From Hon. W. Johnston, offering to pay half cost of cleaning out Rongotea-Longburn drain. Prom Holden and Nicholas, stat-ing-they had forwarded a quantity of noxious weed destroyer and exterminator for trial.
Mr H. Stewart of (Feilding) submitted a lengthy report on the two engines in use by Council, which according to the report were badly in want of repair, although the “ Fox," Mr Stewart stated, was in fair order, and only required very little work to set her right. Prom Dr Pqmare, stating while inspecting the Motuiti Pa he had found the main drain in an unsatisfactory condition, there being no outlet for the water, and asking Council to have matter attended to. From W. H. Mathers and 18 other ratepayers of Glen Oroua, drawing attention to the had state of the road past Mr H, Sanson’s residence. From G. H. Young, Mt. Stewart, complaining of the practice of removing soil infested with gorse seed across the road to near 'his property. FINANCE. Mr Purnell, County clerk, reported the various balances of accounts as follows ;—General account dr., £ll2O 6s 6d ; loan cr., £714 11s 2d; net debit balance, £375 8s 4d. Riding accounts—Sandon cr., £6 15s 6d; Mt. Stewart cr., £230 16s 8d; Waitohi cr., £ll9 14s sd;<Rongotea or., £299 3s 2d ; Carnarvon cr., £B4 12s Id; Kawakawa er., £Bll 17s 8d; Awahou cr,, £176 8s lid. TRAM REPORT. Mr Wrigley submitted the following report The total receipts from tram column for month was £ll9
16s 8d ; expenses, £ll2 Gs 5d ; leaving cr. balance of £7 10s 3d. • The following quantities of goods jfere carried -Grain, 72 tons; coat, 6 tons; merchandise, 82 tons; hemp, 89 tons; chaft, 8 trucks; flax, 28 trucks; firewood, 5 trucks; metal, 12 trucks; timber, 12,652 feet; passenger fares amounted to £6 8s 4d. Seventy rails end 50 sleepers had been replaced since last report, MISCELLANEOUS. T. Christensen's objection to clear the gorse was referred to the Engineer, H. Clams’ claim for laud taken was passed for payment. Mr Purnell was instructed to interview Mr Hunter, of the Feilding road, re a metal pit. The Hon. Johnston’s offerto clear’ drain was held over. • It was decided to give the weed exterminator a trial. It was resolved to insure with the Ocean Company. The question of heavy traffic was held over until a decision is given in the case brought against a carter by the Rangitikei Council. The Glen Oroua settlers’ petition was left in the hands of Cr Clarke. No action was taken in the matter of the National memorial. Crs Clarke and Hammond were appointed to attend the Kairanga County Council meeting to deal with the protective works at the Awahuri bridge. The Council was of the opinion that Mr Fulton should be asked to again report on the work required. ! Resolved, that all correspondence and accounts to be dealt with at future Meetings of the Council be in the hands of tne clerk not later than the Saturday previous to such meetings. • Notice is to be given Mr Boyle that if he does not complete his tramway extension contract by the 6th of August that the penalty, viz., £lO per week be enforced, A. E. Bull’s tender for supplying metal on Sanson’s at 5s per yard,: Jones and Bank’s at 4s and Hiok--ford’s line at 2s 6d was accepted. The Overseer was instructed to get metal carted into the holes near Scott’s Ferry where required,. J. Harris was appointed poundkeeper at Sandon and M. Holland at Rongotea. The Overseer was instructed to arrange with the manager of Moutoa estate to have the wash-out near the Perry filled up. Resolved, that notice be given under Section 16 of the Public Works Act, 1900, to the undermentioned persons to lower and trim trees or hedges overshadowing the various roads mentioned to the height specified : Mrs Brabant, Hickford’s line to 12 feet; Mrs Whittaker, Hickford’s line, to 12 feet; Mrs Chryatall, Hickford’s line, to 12 feet; Henry Sanson, Sanson’s line, to 8 feet. George Leat was given authority to impound stock from the Sanson Riding and M. Holland from Rongotea, Waitohi and KaWa-Kawa Ridings. It was decided to engage Mr Stewart, engineer, of Feilding, to repair the Council’s engines for a sum of £6O.
