Loans to Local Bodies.
A deputation comprising the Mayor and Councillors of Foxton, accompanied by Mr John Stevens, M.H.R. (member for Manawatu), and the Hon. H. Feld wick, M.L.C., interviewed the Acting-Premier, Sir, J. 6. Ward, yesterday, and asked for some alteration of the law by which the Borough Council should be enabled, to borrow money with which to make- roads within the borough. The Act gave power to borrow for public, works except roads. The financial position of the borough was sound, the assets were good • but though the burgesses were anxious to borrow under the Loans to Local Bodies Act in order to improve the roads, the Act absolutely prohibited them from doing so. The Mayor of Poxton (Mr Hennessy), and other members of the deputation having also spoken, Sir J. G. Ward promised to inquire into the matter.. He pointed out that a 'general, amendment of the! law would be required, but he would see if this amendment could be made. The Hon. H. Feldwick said that this question was one of importance to many small boroughs throughout the colony. The deputation also asked that telephone communication should be ressored between Foxton and Sandon. The Acting-Premier said that he would obtain a report upon this subject. Mr Hennessy, before the deputation retired; conveyed the thanks of the borough to Sir J. G. Ward for the gift of land from the wharf to the Main street in Foxton. —N.Z. Times.
