Lord Kitchener in London.
The Orotava arrived at Southampton from Capetown at nine o’clock on Saturday morning. The vessel was quarantined, as Major Gordon, of the Gordon Highlanders, was suffering from smallpox, but. Lord Kitchener was met by the Duke of Connaught, Mr Brobrick, the Duke of 'Connaught, and several Indian Princes, and was welcomed by the Prince of Wales. Lord Kitchener, who looked bronzed and well, introduced General French to his Highness. Lord Kitchener, General lan Hamilton and General French, with the staff in khaki, drove from the station, Lord Roberts’s staff accompanying. They received a tremeradous ovation. Many colonials witnessed the procession from the coronation stands on Constitution HUI, which was lined by colonial and Indian troops. The Queen and many Royal guests viewed the procession from a balcony at Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales entertained Lord Kitchener at St James’s Palace; His Highness thanked him on behalf of the King for his services. The Empire, he declared, had watched with admiration Lord Kitchener’s tenacity, skill and patience. Lord Salisbury and members of the Ministry were present. Lord Kitchener and General French visited the King later in the day".
