PUBLIC WOBKS 7 "COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Public Works Committee was held last night at 7 80. Present— Ors Hennessy (chairman), dower, Symons and Spoirs. The minutes of tbe Iftst meeting were read and confirmed. The overseer put in an estimate of quantity of timber required for footpaths and culverts, and said the culvert at the bridge in Main-street required repairing, and it had been fixed up temporarily. , . ,' The committee were of opinion that it would be better to replace the present wooden structure with dram pipes, and it was Proposed by Or Hennessy. secended by Or Gower, That the culvert near W. Collins’ house be replaced with drain pipes. Carried. The Clerk reported that 10 trucks of gravel bad arrived at station. The overseer mentioned the different streets where metal was required for repairing. . Cr Gower said 10 to a dozen loads of metal Was required on the road opposite the Motoa Estate where one or two bad holes bad appeared. Cr Speira also mentioned some bad places in Russell-skeet. Proposed by Or Symons, secondea by Cr SpeirS, 'ihat the. metal at station be placed on following roads : —Moutoa road, 12 tons; Union street, 15 tons} Russell street, 14 tons, and the balance at the discretion of the overseer. Carried. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting was then held, Crs Baker, Walsh and Robinson being also present. . Cr Hennessy was elected Chairman. Cr Hennessy said the meeting had been called to accept the resignation of the late Mayor (Mr Jenks), and the election of a successor. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Or Walsh, That the Mayor’s resignation be accepted with regret* Carried,. The Chairman read the Act dealing with the election of a Mayor* The whole of the Councillors- Were each in turn proposed for the office, who all declined the honor, and it was eventually proposed by Or Speirs, seconded by Cr Symons, That the election of Mayor stand adjourned till the ordinary meeting. Carried. The meeting then adjourned.
