Foxton Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held last night in the Library. Present —Ors F. E. Jenka (Mayor), J. Symons, W. Robinson, W. ParA. 'Spews, P. Hennassy, and B. Gower. ■ The minutes of the last meeting were read and contfimed. The following resolutions were passed:— % Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by'Or'Symons, That Ors Gower, Purcell and Speirs bo requested to examine tbe approach to Mr B. Austin’s, and report on same in compliance with Mr Austin’s request to erect gate and fence on same, with power to grant permission for same. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor by Or Robinson, That the next ordinary Meeting of this Council be held this day four weeks, the 7th July, and that the Clerk’s annual holiday commence on 9th July. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Or Purcell, That this Council by virtue of “ The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900,” “ The Rating Act, 1894, and amendments,” and the “Public Libraries Act,”’ do now strike a General Rate of fifteen ponce in the £, and a Library rate of one penny in the £ on the annual rental value of the whole of the rateable properties within the Borough for the period commencing Ist April, 1902, and terminating on 81st March, 1908, to be due and payable in one sum at the Council office on 14th July, 1902. Carried. Proposed by Or Symons, seconded by Or Speirs, That Mr Aden be asked to lend his boat for the use of taking soundings, etc., at the Wirokino bridge, and that he be paid £1 per year for use of same. Carried. Proposed by Cr Henuessy, seconded by Gr Purcell, That the Clerk write to and inform the Marine Department that this Council do not consider the Department’s answer to application for lighting river satisfactory, for reasons to be added. Carried.
p oposed by the Mayor, seconded by CT Purcell, That owing to the lapse of the meeting of the Councillors to make sanitary inspection on day appointed, that the Inspector of Nuisances, with Constable Forster bo appointed to make the inspection on some near day to be chosen by the constable. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded by Cr Walsh That the accounts as read be passed for payment. Carried. Proposed by Cr Gower, seconded Cr Robinson That the reports as read be adopted. Carried. Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Baker That the overseer be instructed to put a new culvert in the Main Street opposite Mrs Collins’ house as soon as possible. Carried. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Gower, That owing to the many demands on the Borough funds, the bad state of the roads, the want of metal, the untared state of the footpaths, and the necessity for shortly rebridging or relaying drains, this Council cannot see its way to entertain the proposal to vote £SOO towards the extension of Tramway twenty four miles distant. Not carried.
Proposed by Cr Henneaay, seconded by Cr Purcell, That tne Town Clerk inform the Manawatu County Council, that this Council regrets the decision arrived at re extension of tram into Bulls, and feeling the importance of the work are prepared to take up a liability of say .£SOO, if same can be borrowed from the Government at per cent and legally so, in order that the proposed extension to Bulls may be carried out. Carried. Proposed by Cr Symons, seconded by Cr Purcell, That the Railway Department be asked to erect a lamp at the head of the alley leading from the station to Clyde street. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Speirs, That the Clerk write to the Borough lamplighter calling his attention to the very unsatisfactory state of the lights, and also to call his attention to the specification re time of extinguishing the lights. Carried.
