A Surprise.
The other day the Government; appointed our Mayor, Mr Frederick Edward Jeuka, a member of the Manawatu Licensing Committee, being apparently unaware., that he received a salary for occupying that position. When he arrived at Marton on Saturday he received a sur- _ prise when the Police inspector very rightly objected to his presence on the Committee. Mr Jenka knew he received public money, and section' .. 9 10 of The Licensing Act, 1881’V. sets the position out very clearly, and the annoyance caused to Mr Jenks arose from his not informing the Government of bis • disqualifioa- • tion, and from his not having read the Act carefully that be was called on to administer. The section referred to is very plain and oonolades as followsNo person shallbe qualified to-be elected or,to act, as a member of a Licensing! Committee during the time be holds a paid office - under the Government of the colony or uuder the Council of any county or borough.”
