The Shipping Combine.
It is affitmed at Belfast that as a result of interviews between Mr W. J. Pirri* P C., Chairman of the Harland and Wolff Shipping Company, and Messrs Chamberlain and Balfour, the White Star Line will not cease to exist and that merely a transfer of shares will take place, Mr Morgans syndicate will nominate seven British members of the combination and register the White Star vessels in their names under the English Companies Act. Present and future ships will be at the disposal of the Government, and the vessels will retain the English flag. A meeting of the White- Star shareholders almost unanimously approved the sale. It is understood that the price obtained was ten millions. It is reported that Mr T. H. Ismay, the company’s Liverpool manager, strongly opposed the sale on patriotic grounds.
