The Transvaal. PEACE PROSPECTS. Mr Brodriek (Secretary for War), in speaking at a dinner tendered to him by the Broderers’ Company (one of.the London Livery Companies), said the Government hoped for peace, but in the interval was unreservedly sending out men and material of all descriptions as it the war was going to last a year or two years The nation, at the conclusion of the war, would, be declared, be far stronger than when it entered it. The Boer delegates are still holding meetings with burghers in the field. GALLANT COLONIALS. Lord Kitchener, in a despatch to the War Office, dated March Bth, describing recent operations, dwells upon the fight at Langverwacht. The report saysGarratt’s New Zealanders (Seventh Regiment) displayed great gallantry and resolution at a critical moment. Their conduct reflects the highest credit on all ranks and New Zealand. Nothing could have been finer than the behaviour of the men. Amongst the list of colonial officers brought under favourable notice for conspicuous and good services performed at the end of last year and early in the present year are the following members of the Seventh New Zealand Regiment Major Bauchop, Lieutenants Hickis, P. T. Emerson, P. J. Overton, and Farrier-Sergeant Quinn. Lord Kitchener mentions the resolute, and capable way Major Toll led the Queensland Bushmen on four occasions. Sergeant-Major Wassen, N.S.W., is mentioned for his dash in holding a kopje with four men, to cover the retimement of wounded. Farrier-Sergeant Quinn, New Zealand, is mentioned for recovering stampeded horses from the enemy’s lines under close fire and hotly pursued Sergeant Kent, New Zealand, is mentioned for repulsing fifty Boers,
