Britain’s Budget.
ADOPTION OF THE STAMP DUTIES. The House of Commons has sanctioned the increased stamp duties on bills, dividend warrants and cheques by 186 votes to 119. The Chancellor of the Exchequer promised to consider the exemption of small cheques. The Chancellor of the Exchequer informed the House of Commons that he anticipated the Transvaal revenue next year to be four or five millions. Within a few years the new colonies would be able to bear a capital charge on thirty millions towards the war. “ The Times” says the new loan of £32,000,000 will be issued immediately in the form of consols at 93J-. It will be well received. The “ Standard ” states that half the loan has already been taken privately. American financiers have subscribed five millions.
Sir Wilfrid Lauder, Premier of Canada, has expressed joy at England’s new policy, which, he says, has cleared the way for arranging a system of larger trade within the Empire. The Australian Chamber of Commerce in London is organising a movement in favour of a preference tariff for colonial flour and wheat. Canada is also moving in the matter.
In the House of Commons a resolution sanctioning the war loan%ras carried by 229 votes to 103. Sir Michael Hicks-Beaoh, replying to a question, implied that the duty on corn included all cereals, rice, peas, haricots and manufactured goods, such as macaroni, starch, tapioca, sago and arrowroot.
