Jewels and Gold in a Lake
The Daily Mail’s Parliamentary correspondent writes: —Several members of the House of Commons are interested in a treasure lake in Central America, and have formed a syndicate to recover the jewels and gold by which it is believed to be paved. This is the sacred lake of Colombia, which is formed in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is close to the emerald mines, which have been worked with success, and has been associated for centuries with wealthy deposits by the Spaniards and their predecessors. The former made efforts to drain the lake 800 years ago, but their engineering appliances were defective. Humbolt speaks of the emeralds deposited in the lake as worth billions, and the Indiana continue to find the precious stones, as well as gold upon the edge of the waters after a storm. The projectors of the present operations to solve the interesting mystery have attacked the lake from beneath its basis. A tunnel has been cut into the mountain, and a shaft will be made to “ tap ” the lake, with screens to catch the precious stones that may be dislodged and with riffles of mercury to arrest the gold. When the basin is empty the great secret of centuries will bo disclosed.
