The Valdare’s Company.
What gives every promise of being one of the most important amusement enterprises introduced to Foxton for some considerable time, -will eventuate at the Public Hall on next Thursday evening the 17th inst., when we are promised a visit from the famed Yaldares World of Novelties Company. A Timaru exchange speaking about the Company, says: the visit of the Yaldares was looked forward to with more than ordinary interest was evidenced by the capital attendance at the Theatre last evening, the majority of seats in the dress circle being occupied, and the downstairs portion entirely filled. The previous visit of the Yaldares, backed up by their well-earned reputation, no doubt was responsible for the warmth of their reception. Too much cannot be said of their performance on the bicycles, though to some of the audience it must be very nerve-trying experience to watch them, as a fall in some of the acts might be attended with danger. However, the Yaldares appear to possess the requisite amount Of confidence in their ability to do their sensational cycling, and judging from last night their confidence is evidently not misplaced. Every different movement, however ..
intricate and difficult, was carried . out with neatness and celerity, and the audience heartily applauded the efforts of the wonderful cyclists. The climax to a most interesting and sensational act was reached when Mr Valdaro, mounted on the frame and back wheel, raced against Miss Valdare, who cycled on a front wheel fitted with handlebars and pedals. The balancing was necessarily of a very high order, when a spiral ride by Mr Valdaro, supporting the Misses Valdare on his shoulders, was done without visible effort, and a dead stop in the centre of the stage did not disturb their equilibrium. The other members of the company received careful attention, and the opinion was unanimously expressed that for all-round excellence it would be hard to name a combination to beat them. Zamoni, the magician, introduced several entirely new and clever feats in magic, and later on gave a vontriloquial entertainment that was distinctly meritorious. Mr Richard Shepherd, who has a very fine baritone voice, sang “ The Eng-lish-Speaking Race” with great k vigour, and as an encore was equally I satisfactory with his rendering of the ' “ Star of Bethlehem.” The Sisters Val appeared very much at home on the tight wire, giving a varied and cleVer exhibition of their powers of walking, pirouetting, and passing each other on the wire. A real cyclist rough rider, Mr Tom Powers, provided great amusement by his funny tumbling and fancy tricks, but he also showed, apart from the humourous side, that he is a decidedly clever cyclist. He wound up with a smart burlesque on cycling, riding a common carriage wheel round the stage, and finally doing a skipping act that simply paralysed the audience. Miss Beattie Galardi is a charming dansause, as well as a bright singer, and her items were very well received and heartily encored. A juggling and balancing turn by Mons. Arlo was also of a very high order, his tricks with billiard balls, knives, etc., evidently being as numerous as he desires or ingenuity suggest. Messrs Tom Hartford and Dick Shepherd were highly amusing in their eccentricities as knock abouts, causing much hearty laughter by their absurdities. A farcical sketch entitled “ Boy Lost ” concluded the entertainment, and sent the audience away in high good humour. The plan of reserve seats is now I open at Mr A. Fraser’s.
