Volunteer Notes.

On Thursday evening the local volunteers mustered forty strong at the drill shed under the command of Lieutenants Walsh and Baker, who put the men through some useful work both inside the shed and in the open. After drill an election was held for a captain, owing to Captain Hunter resigning, for which position Lieut. Walsh was elected unopposed. ■ Two candidates were proposed for the position of second lieutenant— Sergfcs. Hamer and Austin. On a ballot being taken a majority was found to be in favour of Sergt. Austin. But two-thirds having to be in favour of an officer elected, a poll was taken to that effect, but the voting being fairly equal the election had to be postponed till some future date. A ballot was also taken for . a junior bugler, two candidates being nominated —Masters F. Collins and B. Shadbolt—which resulted in the former being elected. The Rev, H. Wilson was elected chaplain of the corps. 1 Five new members were ballotted for and accepted. FIRING COMPETITION FOR TROPHIES.
