■. The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday. Presenters Wilson (chairman), McLennan, Hammond, Clarke, Eobinson and Carter. The following Correspondence was read and dealt with■■■■■< From Manchester Board, asking to be informed what Council were prepared to do in the matter of a road roller; also forwarding a report submitted by Warden Preece, who suggested that an arrangement should be entered into by local bodies and Mr Milverton, whereby the Manchester Road Board should guarantee employing the roller three weeks, Palmerston Borough Council two weeks, Feilding Council one week, Manawatu and Kairanga Councils one week each, during the year. , From A. Hickford, offering 5s 6d per load for right to out flax over Council’s roads for a term of 12 months. From Sydenham Borough Council, asking, Council to appoint a representative to a meeting to be held on 16th April to farther discuss the cost of compilation of valuation rolls. From L. H. Greenaway, complaining of great inconvenience in travelling stock on Sanson's Line; gates were always left open and fences in much need of repair. From Horowhenua County Council and Department of Roads, re the proposed Shannon Bridge. The estimated cost of the work including engineering and inspection is £5,000, which, however, does not include test of purchase of land. II was
proposed that the Hcrowhenua and 1 Manawatu Councils and Foxton J Borough should each bear one third | of such cost, less the amount of sub-1 sidy that may ba obtained from Go-1 vernment. | From G. Scott, forwarding j copy of plan of road closed through i Groua Downs estate, which required ( the signature of chairman before | being forwarded to chief surveyor, t From Foxton Borough Council, j asking for power to be conferred on 1 their ranger to impound off the f County roads adjoining the Borough. ■ From Treasury, stating that the. amount of £IOOO, for the part cost of j construction of Bulls bridge, would be paid to Council’s credit, in a few days; also that £1657 for construction of extension of tram from Sanson to Eangitikei, would be paid to OouneiTs credit, TRAMWAY EXTENSION REPORT. Mr Purnell reported that he had arranged for the use of ten waggons at a cost of £5 per waggon per month. The contractor thought he would be able to manage with lour. -He had also arranged with the contractor to fill in siding at MoDonell’s Line, at a cost of £ll, and the work had been completed. He had requested Mr Boyle to sink a well alongside the tramway at the best available site. The work had been carried out under great difficulty, the well having to be bored most of the distance. A fair flow of water was gained at about 20ft. It was found that a Douglas pump could not lift the water up to a staging erected high enough to allow water to flow into the engine. The engine had been supplied with water from the river carted in barrels by the contractor. The cost of the well was approximately £lO. The Council could take into consideration the purchase of windmill. The points and crossings had been received and taken on to the siding at McDonell’s Line. Four hundred feet of totara had been ordered from Dannevirke for packing check rails, and for rails to be used for private crossings. A. quantity of Fong bolls would be required for crossings, which Mr St. Hill, Mr Fulton’s assistant, would endeavour to obtain from Manawatu Co. or , the Government ; the cost would be £l2. Progress payment to M. Boyle;''amounting to £126, also • account of J. Duthie for supply of t rails, &0., was passed for payment.
FINANCE. The treasurer reported the various accounts as under: —General account, or £IBO 8s lid ; loan, dr £36 19s 7d; net credit balance, £l4B 9s 4d. Riding accounts - Sandon Riding, dr lls 2d ; Mt Stewart, cr £BS 11s lid; Waitohi, dr £57 10s Id; Campbell, cr £69 5s 6d; Carnarvon, dr £73 19a lOd ; Kawakawa, or £l7B 12s 6d; Awahou, cr £B7 6s. MISCELLANEOUS. The tram manager reported a credit balance of £55 15s for the month’s working. The question of employing a road roller was left to Messrs Wilson and Hammond. The Rifle Club was requested to take precautions against firing across the Ohakea Road. Mr Hickford’a offer re cutting flax on the road was declined. Mr Greenaway v'aa informed the Council bad no power to compel settlers to repair their fences. —Standard.
