Shooting of Australians.
ANOTHER ACCOUNT. DRINK ALONE RESPONSIBLE. A member of the Bush Veldt Carbineers at the time of the shooting of. the Boers, state that applications for enrolment were taken on condition that they were hardy men, as such were required in a fever-stricken part of the country in which they served, therefore the corps was a fine body. It was a gross libel to say they were “ scallywags.” Captain Hunt was killed in a fair fight and shot through the heart. He was afterwards fearfully mutilated by Boers who were shot by Lieutenants Moran and Handcock and the other officer, who was equally blamable, but Picton and Witton were innocent. He denied that loot was the object, The cause was drink. The quantity of liquor which the officers consumed was marvellous. There were carousals night after night. Many of the officers were always more or less mad with drink.
