Strength of the Navy.
During the debate in the House of Commons on the Naval Estimates, Mr Arnold-Forster, Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, announced that it was proposed to introduce a Bill enabling the enrolment of naval reservists in every colony which would be willing to comply with the Admiralty’s terms. He stated that five submarine boats would be completed this year, and it was intended to build more. He also indicated that an extensive rearmament of smaller battleships and larger cruisers would be made with powerful modern guns. Mr ArnoldPorster added that next year eightyseven warships would be under construction, and concluded, “ Our programme maintains a standard of naval strength in excess of that of any two Powers, while our magazines are full of armour-piercing projectiles and ammunition."
