Shooting.
The match with the Palmerston Guards was fired yesterday, and the Foxton Rifles got defeated by 78 points. The weather was very good for firing, a gentle breeze blowing. The match was at 300, 500, and 600 yards, seven shots each man, and seven men aside. The shooting of the visitors was very good, but the local men were handicapped by having two men, who are good shots, who must have been very nervous, as one only made a at the 300 yards, and the other nowhere near his average score. A lunch was provided and partaken of at the range. The firing commenced at xo and was not concluded till close on 6 p.m. This was owing to a sweepstake match at 500 yards only, being fired after the regular match. The highest scorers jn the match, Col.Sergt. Gray and Sergt. Merriman both received clocks, and Col.-Sergt. Gray carried oft the sweepstakes with the score of ai at 500 yards.
