Fires in America.

A fire broke out at Paterson, New Jersey, during a gale, and destroyed twenty-six blocks in the business section of the town and a portion of the residental quarter. Five churches, a hospital and three newspaper offices were destroyed.

Ten million dollars’ worth of damage was done. One man was killed and twenty injured. A thousand persons are homeless.

Two men were burnt to death by’ the destruction of the Empire Hotel at St. Lpuis. Another fire destroyed forty-five thousand barrels of flour, together with the L:*bigb Valley Railway Company’s pier at Jersey ' ity. The damage is estimated at half a million dollars.
