FOXTON RACING CLUB’S AN' NUAL MEETING.
President—F. Robinson. Vice-president—E. S. Thynne. Treasurer—Geo. Gray. Judge—W. H. Hartgill. Handicapper—J. B. Henrys. Clerk of the Scales—J. Cummerfield. Timekeeper—A. E T. Nixon. Clerk of the Course—J. Andrews. Starter—T. Cameron.
Stewards and Committee —W. Robinson, J. F, Overend, W. Purcell, W. Barber, H. Thynne, F. E. Jenks and J. Symons.
The Summer Meeting of the Foxton Baoing Club on Wednesday and Thursday last may be termed a huge success. The attendance on both days, despite the heavy rain on the second day, was larger than on corresponding days of past years. On the first day over 2000 were on the ground and 1000 on the second day. This meeting has become an institution and grows in popularity every year. The support the Club receives from outside is most complimentary to both office-bearers and Secretary and encourages them to do all that lays in their power to provide good sport, well handled. The two days again passed without a single accident, complaint or protest, the races being up to time and splendidly
contested. On the first day the racing was opened by nine horses facing the Starter, Mr Tom Cameron, who got the large fields on both days well away; fourteen horses ran in the second race, the Maiden Hack Hurdles ; the Gup had only one horse scratched, making twelve who ran for the money; the Maiden Hack Race had eleven starters; the Summer Handicap saw ten horses at the post. The fields on the Second Day were even larger, the January Hack Handicap had eight starters in heavy rain; there were nine horses in the Second Hack Hurdle Handicap; the big money, the President’s Handicap, had only one horse scratched for it, and ten contested the race; eight horses ran in the Carnarvon Welter Hack Handicap; and the Electric had a field of twelve.
The visitors came by road and rail and the Government line had a train of 15 carriages both days ; the first day the train was packed. The public came to invest as £5493 went through the Totalisator, worked by Messrs Neylon and Spriggino in their usual prompt and careful manner, being an increase of £1621 over the corresponding day of last year, and a sum of £BB9B on the second day, being £62 less than on a very fine corresponding day at the previous meeting, thus giving the Club an advance of £1459 over any other meeting, being a gross sum of £BB9I for the two days. The purchasers of the privileges showed their acumen when they gave the auctioneer more money than had been previously given, and they can have had nothing to complain about. The class of horses were tip-top as their names and breeding shows, and by the large acceptances the value of Mr Henrys as handicapper is testified.
The Starter we have mentioned as being very successful at his work, and (ha Judge, Mr Hartgill, his first appearance at Foxton, was wonderfully prompt at getting bis numbers up. He had no fine finishes to decide, but the whole feeling of the Stewards and the public was that if he had had he was the right man in the right place, and any decision would be received without question. The hardest worked man was the Secretary, Mr John R. Whyte, who, assisted by Mr Keith, got through his multitudinous duties, wall, courteously and correctly. We would like to draw attention to the duties of _a Secretary at a meeting, outside of which he has much to do to lay groundwork for success, as it is not generally fully recognised. Outside of pure Secretarial duties for the races, he has to be a financier, as to his hands are trusted a good deal of money by investors residing at a distance, and for one day, just as an instance, he received 880 telegrams for £4OO to place on the Totalisator. He has to record the amount, name and address in a book, see that the money is placed on the right races, and to the successful backers forward them their winnings.’ It makes a considerable increase in his labours for which there is nothing to show. That such work is heavy, an extra operator was engaged at the local Telegraph office for the race days, and we understand that the inward messages numbered over 700 for that time. We believe every official ol the Club acknowledges that in Mr Whyte they have an excellent officer, and also that horseowners are of the same opinion.
The ladies, on the day that the sun shone, graced the course in _ the handsomest of attires and materially aided to relieve the scene, v The following day the pretty butterfly colours were sadly missed. The catering, in the hands of the Messrs Langley, was very satisfactory and they reaped their reward. This firm which may be said to have had their rise in catering for the Foxton Racing Club are now in great demand for similar gatherings, Feilding having secured their services, and also Pahiatua, and the Wellington Club will possibly place the catering in their hands next year. This is a compliment to the caterers and also shows the appreciation of the public at the Club’s efforts to have all their arrangements as excellent as they can. This is the point the Club tries io gain, io serve the pubto the best of their power in all matters, and the appreciation of these efforts is shown by a steady yearly increase in the attendance, those who have been once, come again. During the meeting the local Brass Band played a nice selection of music, and had a very smart appearance in their new uniforms. We have no need to note the duties of the Stewards as on the race cards they are handed down, but it is only fair to say that every one worked hard and satisfactorily as the result has proved. Following are the results: — FIRST DAY.
