Manawatu County Council.
The monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Sandon on Friday. Present—Ors J. G. Wilson (in the chair), Hammond, Clarke, Robinl son, McLennan, and Carter. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows
From Returning Officer, notifying election of Chas. Frederick Carter to the vacancy in the Council.—The chairman, on behalf of the Council, welcomed Mr Carter to the Council.
From Roads Department, forwarding copy of Ngawhakarau Road Commission.—The Councillors expressed themselves as highly pleased with their efforts to resist payment on behalf of this road. The work will not in any case cost the Council more than £450, a much less sum than anticipated. _ Prom Job Vile, re deviation of road on Okakea estate; also offering on behalf of his sons to fence road line at 19s per chain, including two gates. Prom L. H. Greenaway, stating he had cleared the gorse from opposite his property; also drawing attention to spread of gorse on Jones’ Line.
Prom P. Robinson, stating he had arranged to have boat at Scott’s Perry attended to for 12s.—Action confirmed.
From W. T. Bull, Rongotea, complaining that a neighbour’s calves were dying and had not been buried. —No action taken.
Prom Roads Department, asking the Council to pay £B7 9s lid, their share of a further payment passed to contractor of Bulls bridge. Prom E. Nimmo, re occupation of land at Moutoa, and asking engineer to meet him and mark off fence line.
Prom Charles Hopping and thirty ratepayers and dairymen, of Glen Oroua and Taikorea, asking that the Council should include hemlock in the list of noxious weeds.
From Mr Duncan, Stock Inspector, relating to the destruction of hemlock —Referred to Agriculture Department. * Prom Health Department, asking Council to empower its members to see that the provisions of the Act are carried out between the sittings of the Council.-—Mr Purnell appointed. From Holman Claris,, asking Council to pass account for £lB for land taken at Okau, Moutoa, before he completed the purchase of the property. From A. Strang, enclosing order on Council from W. Green lor £55 17s, and asking that the amount be passed for payment.
From Treasury, stating the sum £4OOO was now available to half cost of construction of and Tompkins’ Line, and also stating that £4OOO, for the part construction of Taikorea, Milner and Kellow’a Line, was also available. From same, stating £BOOO second advance on account# of the loan of £7OOO, tramway extension, would be paid to the Oouncii’wjredit. , From same, stating £6§o, being; the fourth advance on account of £3500, loan for metalling Main drain road and Cowper’s Lino,-would also be paid to the Council’s credit. -V From the New .Zealand Railways, offering to paint and brand trucks par- * chased by the Couiicil before delivering them at Himatangi. MISCELLANEOUS. Cr Clarke mentioned that he had been informed by Mr Chas. Carr, auctioneer, that while riding from Rongotea one evening he had met a traction engine without lights, and the driver of which had refused to stop when requested to do so, consequently Mr Carr narrowly averted a serious accident. Councillors considered that some steps should be taken to prevent people using engines oa the road at night without a light, and Cr _ Clarke eventually undertook to interview Mr Carl Anderson in the matter. Cr Clarke again brought up the question of impounding cattle at Rongotea.—After the matter had been fully discussed, the following resolution was unanimously carried, viz., that 'applications be called for the position of jjoundkeeper at Rongotea. Applications to be in by next meeting. Cr McLennan stated that he had been offered the sum ot £5 for the right to cut Sax on Jones’ and Kellow’s line. After a lengthy discussion councillors thought it would cause more damage to the roads than the amount would cover, consequently it was decided not to accept the offer. who advocated the advisability, of something being done tot Saunders’ road near th& Shannon .. Ferry, stated that whenever there was any wet weather the road in , question was wholly impassable. ’ Mr Mitchell, County overset, was. in-, structed to arrange to meet Cr' Carter at the locality in question on a date" fixed and see what could be done. SPECIAL REPORT. Mr Mitchell submitted a special report bearing on the state .of the • various bridges throughout the County nearly all of which were in a fair state of repair. Mr Mitchell was instructed to have the Longburu bridge painted and various other matters touched ' upon in his report attended to. TRAM REPORT. Total receipts for month, £172 6s ud; expenditure, £ll7 18s id; credit balance, £54 8s lod. The following goods had been carried daring the month .'—Grain, 17 tons, minerals,, including rails, 348, merchandise, 51, hemp, 34, manure, 38, chaff 1 truck, firewood and sleepers 18 trucks, green flax 19 trucks, timber 750 ft, pigs 3 trucks, wool 736 bales. The passenger fares amounted to £7 18s <jd. . TRAIN EXTENSION. The following is a complete estimate, of cost of tramway extension, a distance of miles, not including granary and windmillßail fastenings, £2944 4s yd; freight on rails, £283 xos; formation and bridges, £625 ; sleepers and freight, £ 1770; laying rails, £9OO ; points and cross 4 ings, £100; goods shed, £6 >4 engineer * £300; land and transfers. £110; advertising and preliminaries, £100; four M waggons, £360 ; total, £7552 14s gd. finance. ; The following table, compiled by Mr Purnell, was placed on the table: £ —General account—Dr £1173 15s 3d, loan of £3182 33 id, net credit balance £2006 7s lod. Riding accounts— Sandon dr £3O 3s gd. Mt. Stewart cr ' £113123 ad, Waitohi dr £B4 gs gd, Campbell cr £7 is 4d, Carnarvon dt £46 13 rod. Kawa Kawa cr £137 16 3d, Awahou cr £144 10s fid.—Standard.
