The publicity of the Courts Mturn to Pekin is regarded as revolutionary in the light of Chinese custom. The Emprqss-Dowagar repeatedly acknowledged the salutations of the foreigners after burning incense to her ancestors at the Temple of the Goddess of Mercy. ' The British garrison was kept in barracks, but the American garrison was allowed to see the spectacle. Two companies of Chinese cavalry, mounted on Australian horses, participated in the procession.
