The Transvaal.
VARIOUS OPERATIONS:
Colonel Colenbrander, with a small force, crosssed Magoto Pass at night, and at dawn surprised Field-Cornet Loney at Waterval. Five Boers were killed and twenty-nine captured, despite the fact that many Boers were in the vicinity. The districts between Orange River and Thabanchu are clear of Boers and Major-General C- Knox’s column has moved north. Colonel Plumer and Spens drove a considerable force uadet? Commandants Chris Botha and Opperman from a position north of Amerspoprt. A detachment under Major Valentine, an officer of much promise suffered severely. Major Valentine and eighteen men were killed, and five officers and twenty-eight men were wounded. The Boers left nine dead. Colonel Williams surprised a laager on the upper part of Oliphant’s river, capturing eleven of the enemy, including Field-Cornet Breytenbach. Major Doris captured six Boers, 50 waggons and much stock at Mokwani. Lieutenant-General French reports that the Boers in the north-east of Cape Colony are so reduced in numbers and fighting power that the district only requires elaborate police supervision. Two rebels were sentenced at Colesberg to ten years’ imprisonment and three others to death. The latter sentences have been commuted to penal servitude for life. REINFORCEMENTS FOR DE WET.

On the sth inst Major General Elliott captured nine Boers, and found a destroyed Krupp gun at Kroonstadt. Lovat’s Scouts surprised portion of My burg’s commando at Kingscrown, killing one and capturing eight, including Commandant Neering. Colville’s Scouts have captured thirteen Boers on the. Swaziland border. EXPENDITURE ON HORSES. The War Office has expended £i3>‘ 000,000 on horses since the beginning of the war. MISCELLANEOUS. Lieutenant Hay, of the Sixth New Zealand Contingent, is convalescent, and has resumed duty. The King has authorised the raising ot two regiments to be designated the North and South Ireland Imperial Yeomanry. Lord Kitchener is transforming the Imperial Light Horse into a truly Imperial brigade, adding squadrons from England, Canada, and Australia, Major Karri Davis will bo the organiser. At the instance of the National Burgher Scouts, twenty-one of their relatives surrendered at Middleburg, in the Transvaal, on the 7th January. Latest. The extension of the blockhouses is giving Bruce Hamilton & firmer grip of the Eastern Transvaal. Botha is concentrating in the vicinity of Mongoma; Grobelaar is at Inthlazatye ; and Dannhauser is at Babanango. Their combined forces are estimated at 1250, with three guns. Britain’s grant to Germans deported from South Africa more than covered material claims, and left something for moral damages, which Germany has distributed. CATTLE. A cable has been received at Brisbane from Lord Milner, stating that 10,000 young breeding cattle are required in South Africa for the ensuing year, and asking the price. A reply has been sent that the price will be £3 to £4 per bead.
