The Harris Case

The fourth day's proceedings ended on Thursday by the Magistrate saying he was in this case asked to dismisss a charge against a defendant, the facts of which were practically admitted by the defence. It was, for instance, admitted there was proof that erroneous claims ljad been made by the firm — claims in excess of what could be justly charged by the firm against the bankrupt estate. The only set-off so far tendered was the evidence of the young man Baggett, and he was asked on that to dismiss the case. He was not prepared to dismiss the case in the absence of further evidence from the defence — although it was quite possible that the statement which it had been stated that accused was prepared to make, added to the evidence of his

witnesses, would place a different complexion upon the case. The formal warning was then read over to the accused, and he stated that he intended to make a statement and call evidence. The case stood adjourned until io o'clock yesterday morning when the chargesrwere dismissed.
