The Transvaal.
FRENCH'S TROOPS AGAIN IN
ACTION.

The casualties numbered thirty-six. GENERAL BULLER. General Buller, who is on his way back to England from the seat of war received a great ovation on his arrival at Capetown from Natal. FIGHTING IN THE WEST. Colonel Douglas, with the North Lancashire Regiment, Northumberland Yeomanry, and Australian Bashmen, on Saturday dislodged a strong force of Boer from a kopje north of Zeerust after five hours' fighting. The British lost four men killed and ten wounded. Colonel the Earl of Erroll's troops have occupied Buftelshoek, in the Western Tronsvaal, without loss. The New Zealanders have greatly distinguished themselves in the operations carried out by Lieut.-General Lord Methuen. Major-General Settle met with severe opposition at Bloembof, in the south-west Transvaal, losing sixteen men wounded. PROMISE OF CONSIDERATE TREATMENT. As the Boers believe that surrender means death or banishment, Lord Roberts has issued a proclamation promising that those who voluntarily surrender will receive considerate treatment. Their persistence in warefare hae also been due to an idea of helping Mr Kruger in his mission to EurOpeiMR SCHREINER. Mr Schreiner has placed his resignation as a member of the Legislative Assembly in • the bands of his election committee. SNIPING AND SKIRMISHING. At Frederickstad four of General Barton's foragers were captured' by the enemy, and several were wounded. : As a punishment for sniping the township of Bothaviile has been burned by General Hunter. It is stated that the Boers often take refuge in farms crowded with women and children, thus preventing the l British from shelling them, though the Boers continue sniping from their cover. * MISCELLANEOUS. Holland is indisposed to tolerate useless pro- Boer demonstrations on Mr Kruger's arrival. The French ardour is cooling. 1 The Dutch paper " Al^meer Handlesblad " recommends Holland ! to pursue a policy of silence as a token of mourning for the extinct Republic. Queensland Bushmen, under Colonel Lloyd, surprised a party of Boers at Pienaar's river; a station on the railway line north of Pretoria, capturing , eighteen of them, together with many cattle and sheep.
The Outlanders at Capetown have protested against the postponement of their return to the Transvaal, stating that they are willing to serve in the Town Guards.
