The Mayor.

Last night's Standard has the following paragraph : — " Peace, — So much disritisfaction has been felt over the uncertainty of Peace Day that the Foxton people have wired to the Mayor of Palmerston suggesting that the two towns should celebrate termination of the war on a day to be selected by themselves, and act independently of the Government." As this places the Mayor in the position of having attempted to run a peace demonstration in conjunction with Palmerston, and barring the rest of the colony, we have been requested to state that the paragraph has been penned under a misconception, to prove which the Mayor has handed us j the copy of the telegrams which have passed between himself and the Mayor of Palmerston : — Tuesday, gth October, 1900. The Mayor, Palmerston. What is your opinion re Premier's idea of altering demonstration day ? We think an earlier and separate day preferable. I have meeting on matter to-night. — W. B. Rhodes, Mayor. Tuesday, gth October, 1900. The Mayor, Foxton. Am sorry demonstration is deferred. Presume we shall have to await Government declaration. — Haydon, Mayor.
