School Committee Meeting.

The usual monthly meeting of the above committee was held on Tuesday evening, all the members being present. A memorial from Mr J. T. Ray, and signed by a number of residents, against granting permission to give religious instruction in the school was read, and it was resolved that the application of the Rev. H. S. Leach be not granted. Messrs P. Hennessy and T. Westwood were elected to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of Mr A. Fraser and Mr Morton. _ It was also resolved that the regula.

tions of the Board, which debars pupil teachers from inflicting corporal punishment on the children be strictly enforced. A number of other matters affecting the welfare of the school were discussed, and several suggestions were made and adopted, which will place the school in a more satisfactory position. On Wednesday morning the Chairman and some members went down to the school and informed Mr Stewart that no teacher except himself and Miss O'Brien were to punish with any stick or cane, They also saw each teacher and told them likewise and warned them that any infraction of this order would lead to their suspension and they would be reported to the Board. The Committee also informed Mr Stewart and Miss O'Brien that they objected to the. use of the stick except in extreme cases, and then the punishment should be administered without remarks and in a manner to command respect.
