Manawatu County Council.

The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. Present— Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), J. R. McLennan, T. P. Clark, T. Masters, F. Robinson, H. Hammond, A. Strang. Correspondence . was dealt with as follows : — From Crown Lands Commissioner in reference to gravel reserves in Ohakea estate, stating he would meet the chairman and discuss matter. From District Railway Engineer, stating that extensive repairs were needed to tramline at Carnarvon.— Repairs to be made. From John Good, offering to keep Sandon roads in repair according to the specificatipns for £25 a year.— Cr Masters to deal with matter. From Manchester Road Board, suggesting that Aorangi street, Feilding, be widened, and offering to give use of road forming machine. — Left to chairman to arrange. From Thomas Bowe and 15 other ratepayers in Awahou riding, requesting Council to take steps to raise a loan of £335 to make a road to Mr Bowe's place.— Loan of £400 to be raised. From James Harper, dated May Btb, asking that wages due to his son, under age, be paid to htm.— Clerk stated that son had made no claim for wages until now, when he is of age. — Father and son be requested to state their case. From James Walden, Foxton, with £4 in payment for flax cut on road line. From Government Traffic Manager, stating he would make arrangements to supply 40 trucks of gravel at Carnarvon. From Secretary Treasury, stating it was not desirable that fresh legislation should be made to interfere with security of existing loans made to local authorities. From Clerk Rangitikei County Council with memorial to Minister re the Bulls bridge.— The Council approved and signed the memorial. From Tramway Manager, reporting receipts for July had been £94 2s 3d and expenditure £87 8s yd. He recommended that two men be employed to assist to repair the line. — Men to be employed. From Mayor of Foxton, requesting Council to join other contributing bodies to cost of Wirokino bridge, in asking Government to undertake the whole charge owing to inability of local bodies to place a toll upon bridge. It was suggested by the chairman that Government should be asked to make an alteration in the Public Works Act to enable tolls to be charged as intended. Mr Fraser, Clerk of Foxton Borough, who attended, said it had been suggested to Mr Seddon that the Act should be altered, but the latter replied that the House was against tolls on roads and bridges. Mr Fraser also said that the Minister of Public Works was in favor of making the grant equal to the whole cost of the bridge. — T he Council agreed to join in making the request to Government, and appointed Cr Strang as delegate to represent the Council. It was resolved that all rates due to March 31st, 1900, be sued for without further notice. The resolution amending the by-law including the carting of flax, green or dressed, and timber, sawn, split, or in logs, as heavy traffic, was agreed to. One ton and a half was fixed as tbe maximum weight to be carried on one pair of wheels, the tyres of which are less than four inches in width. The by-law will come into force on August 13th. By passing this by-law the Council dealt with the request of Mr Anderson who asked that the carriage of sawn timber should be excluded from the by-law. The Council had a copy of the bylaw in force in the Horowhenua County Council for regulating the traffic of traction engines, under consideration, and it was decided to adopt a by-law to provide that every such engine must cross a bridge on planks, travel at a speed not exceeding two miles on a bridge, three through a town, and five in the country, have a man both in front and behind to warn drivers of vehicles and others, and to prohibit a greater weight than five tons being carried on any waggon drawn by a traction engine and providing for other precautions for the safety of the public and of the roads. It was decided to consider this by-law for adoption at next meeting. It was resolved that tenders be called for formation and cuttings on Feilding-Halcombe road and Lees line, to be in at noon on August 28th, and that the chairman have authority to accept such tender as he consider advisable. •The chairman was given authority to purchase a Champion road forming machine.— Advocate.
