The Transvaal.
FIGHTING ON THE ELANDS RIVER, News has been received that the garrison at Elands River holding the line of communication between Rustenburg and Zeerust was attacked on Saturday last. General Carrington's force, from Rhodesia, which recently arrived at Mafeking, consisting of Yeomanry, Australian Bushment and New Zealanders, with fifteen pounders, went to the relief of the garrison, and two days' heavy firing was heard. It is believed that the garrison has retired westward to Zeerust. BADEN-POWELL RELIEVED. Lieutenant-General lan Hamilton's Rustenburg relief force reached its destination on Monday. SURROUNDING DE WET. Brabant's Horse and the Canadian Regiment have reinforced Lord Kitchener, who is drawing closer the cordon around General Christian De Wet. j [The übiquitous raiding commando led by De Wet is presumably still in hills near Vredefort, on the Vaal river, whither he was followed by Broadwood and Little.] FUTURE OF THE REPUBLICS. Speaking in the House of Commons, the Hon J. Chamberlain (Secretary of State for the Colonies) stated that Canada and Australasia were in complete accord with Great Britain that it was necessary to annex the Boer Republics and establish a military government, with an ultimate concession of local autonomy. DESTRUCTION OF HOMES. The British troops are burning the houses of all the Boers who are ascertained to be accomplices in raids. OPERATIONS AGAINST BOTHA. The Boers are but feebly resisting the advance of Lord Roberts's troops from Middleburg. Another column from the southward is advancing on Machadodorp, about forty'miles east from Middleburg, on the Delagoa Bay railway line. % . Jt \' MISCELLANEOUS. A party of marauders exploded a charge of dynamite on the railway north of Kroonstad Orange River Colony, in an effort to blow up the line.
