Alleged Embezzlement.

At the Rangiora Magistrate's Court Christchurch on Tuesday the charges against Alexander Y. Hay and William Allan of misappropriation of the funds entrusted to the Bank of New Zealand were heard. Hay, who was formerly manager of the bank, was charged with stealing the sum of £68 15s. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Hay was further charged with steal* ing £80 2s sd, and was committed for trial on this charge also. Hay was then charged, with William Allen, formerly teller, of the , bank, with having on various dates between January Ist. 1894, an< * July 10th, 1 goo, stolen various sums amounting in the whole to £4583 18s 6d. The present acting-manager at Ran- • giora stated that be had that morning been handed the following letter by Allan :— Rangiora, July 28th, 1900. James Embling Esq., general manager Bank of New Zealand, Wellington. Dear sir, — With reference to the ■ irregularities which have been for some time going on at the Rangiora I branch, at which point we were t manager and teller respectively, we 1 now wish to state that the irregularities commenced by the payment from th« . funds of the bank to cover a bad debt . of £80 5s 2d made of January 29th, 1 1894. From that date we have used r the bank funds when occasion arose, 1 until we became so hopelessly involved that we were unable to face the position, which was rendered all the more difficult by our being nearly • aiways in a muddled state by drink. • We trust that the bank will allow us ) to repay as much of the money back as we possible can raise, and would 1 most earnestly ask the bank, for the 1 sake of those dependent on us, to deal 3 with us as leniently as possible. — J Yours faithfully (signed), A.
