DE WET'S CLEVER STRATEGY. . The Cape Times gives interesting details of De Wet's recent successful strategy round Kroonstadt. He succeeded in luring Lord Methuen from the railway, then by a clever and swift m-n-e he turned and captured the railway, 15 miles north of Kroonstadt. He blew up the bridge and destroyed the line for several miles. He again swooped down on the railway and captured a couple ot companies — the City Imperial Volunteers and the Yeomanry — who were engaged guarding the line, two men alone reaching Kronstad. On receipt of the news Lord Methuen left Kroonstad to attack the Boers. De Wet cleverly eluded him again, got possession of the railway and waited till six companies of the Derbyshire Militia, a part of Lord Methuen's force, who were sent to join the army, were detraining. The Boers shelled the militia, who were compelled to yield after a futile resistance. Having no artillery, they were no match for the Boers. De Wet's commando was estimated at 2500 men and six guns. How they managed to carry the guns in the swift movements was a mystery. The assumption is they were buried during the previous Boer retreat. __^___^__
