The Battle of the Routes.
There appears to be little doubt that the " battle of the routes " of the North Island Main Trunk railway will again be fought out this session, although, happily, the contest bids fair to be marked by far less bitterness than on previous similar occasions. The Government, it is understood, will not take the responsibility of deciding the route, and will disregard the fact that the Central route is the one which Parliament itself has already decided shall be the one that the railway is to follow. Before the session is over the House will be asked to give its voice on the question, and there is apparently no doubt that the Central route "will be the ono Selected, and that by a very large majority. By th's means the Government will be relieved of all responsibility as far as the route is concerned. and as pressure is to be brought to bear on Ministers to push forward the work of construction with all speed, a large vote for the purpose may be expected to appear on the Estimates. Times.
