Diocesan Synod.
The Anglican Synod now in session in Wellington has devoted a considerable amount of attention to work i among the Maoris. The subject of drunkenness has cropped up several times, but according to native clergymen and others it has very much decreased except in Taranaki, where it is still rife. Some speakers expressed the conviction that any attempt at reform would be welcomed by the natives themselves, and a deputation waited .on • Mr Carroll and drew his attention to the matter. The Minister showed sympathy with the object of "* the deputation, and hoped the native boards shortly to be established by (jovernmerit would be able to cope effectively with the evil. The Synod unanimously agreed to increase the stipends paid to Maori clergymen which it was stated are now so small that they had to resort to manual labor to maintain themselves.
