30,000 TROOPS OUTSIDE PEKIN
The Daily Telegraph states Prince Tuan seized the Empress and Em-
peror and then assumed power. Another account asaerts the Empress Dowager fled.
The Chinese quarter in Pekin has been burnt.
30,000 troops are outside Pekin.
Sir Robert Hart, of the Customs, on the afternoon of the 24th counter-signed a German official message sent to Tientsin to the effect that the foreign colony was besieged and the Legations' situation was desperate, and request* ing to hasten the despatch of help. The river route to Tientsin is now open and the railway repaired to within nine miles.
The allied troops captured over 50 maxims around Tientsin.
Japan is prepared to vigorously sapport the open door policy and integrity of China, but complains of the Indistinctness of the British policy. The Emperor has ordered the first division of the navy to mobolise for China.
Mr Broderick informed the House of Commons that no further advance has vet been made towards the relief of Pekin.
