PROTECTION OF GERMAN INTEREST.
The German community here has asked the permission of the Kaiser to volunteer for the defence of the Ger- j man colony. STRONG FORCES. The railway from Taku to Tientsin has been completely destroyed. There are now ten thousand troops between the two towns, mainly Japanese and French. ADMIRAL SEYMOUR. The latest message from ViceAdmiral Seymour, commander of the joint expeditionary force which set out to march to Pekin, was by heliograph. He then stated that he was surrounded and that sixty-two of his force had been killed and 200 wounded. On receipt ot this intelligence a relieving column two thousand strong immediately left Tientsin to go to his relief. THE PEKIN LEGATIONS. The British Consul at Tientsin has cabled that Sir R. Hart, Director of the Customs Board, has announced that the Legations at Pekin had on the 19th been requested to leave within twenty-four hours. The Consuls at Shanghai and Cheefoo report that the foreign Ministurs left Pekin under the escort of Chinese troops, and proceeded along the Great Wall to Shan-Kai-Kwan. Other reports apoear to be con* firmatory of this intelligence.
