On her return home, Lady Roberts found that the parcel contained the Victoria Cross won by her dead son by his gallantry at the first battle of Colenso.

The Government has sent the following cables: — "To Colonel BadenPowell, Mafeking— On behalf of the people of New Zealand I desire to tender you our heartiest congratulations on the successful result of your heroic defence of Mafeking, and express to you warm appreciation of the noble way in which that defence has been maintained by you and the men under your control. Your noble defence will never be forgotten by the people in this portion of the British Empire, whose highest respect and goodwill you will have. — (Signed) J. G. Ward, Acting • Premier." The following cable was also despatched :— " To Lord Roberts.— On behalf of the people of New Zealand I desire to tender you our heartiest congratulations on the successful relict of Mafeking, and to express our warm appreciation of the noble way in which that defence has been maintained by Colonel Baden Powell and the men under his control.— (Signed)}. G. Ward, Acting Premier."

The Pekin correspondent of " The Times " states that Korea has granted Russia a site in Mesampho harbour for a coal depot and naval hospital. It is also stated that Korea has undertaken not to alienate certain strategic points elsewhere. M. Pavaloff, the Russian Minister in the East, has intimated that Mesampho will be made the winter quarters of the fleet. " The Times," commenting on this intelligence, says " the concession is a grave menace to Japan."

There will be service at All Saints' Church on Thursday evening at 7 o'clock in commemoration of Ascension Day.

Rejoicings over the relief of Mafeking have been world-wide. One very characteristic telegram has been received from the town of Bourke in New South Wales : — '• Bourke drunk."
