New Zealand's Third Contingent.

In a letter dated April 6th from East London, Cape Colony, and written to Mr W. B. Rhodes, Trooper R. Perreau states that they were going up to Bloemfontein and the trucks wefe ready when orders were received that they were to embark on the 7th April for Beira.

Speaking of heir life in East London the writer says: — We have had a grand time of it until now, the people of the town have been so very kind. They have had a concert or a ball every night for the contingent. They think the world of us ; they bring us fruit and cakes up to the camp every day, ahd they pet us up like a lot of dolls.

Mr Perreau mentions that he was talking to one of the soldiers who had just arrived from the front, and he said the first N.Z. Contingent are the pets of South Africa. They are frightened of nothing, and the Boers hate their very name.

He mentions that there is a picture stuck up in East J_ondon of the first contingent charging the Boers with fixed bayonets, and the Boers are scattering in all directions. Under the picture is written " New Zealanders to the rescue." .
