FOXTON C.C. v. LEVIN C.C.
The third match of the season be* tween these Clubs was played on Saturday at Levin, resulting in a win for Levin by 8 runs on the ist innings. The first match, played at Levin, was won by Foxton. Thus honours for the year are easy, as there is no chance of another match this season. The Foxton team journeyed by Barbara's ißf coach, doing the distance in something like an hour and a half, good going over a bad road. Passing through the Levin Bush, we were grieved to see that the Boer work of devastation is proceeding apace. * By-and-bye nothing will be left of this, the fine9t bit of bush in the Wellington district, but a dismal waste of stumps and kopjes. Oh, the Boers! the Vandals I the Huns! Can nothing be done to stop the ravages ot the barbarians ? The weather was all that could be desired for cricket and the play throughout was fairly good, the interest of the spectators rising to boiling point towards the close, as the Foxton score rose steadily to the century and there seemed a chance of the match being drawn. The batting ot both teams was good enough, Gardiner (Capt.) topping the score for Levin with 23, and Butts, Allan, Ayrey, and Jones running into double figures ; whilst for Foxton Furrie's fine score of 48 was compiled by a masterly display oT really good cricket in good style and Martin's 17 was the outcome of sound knowledge and practice. When will our players realise the necessity of prabjice ? The fielding of both teams was deplorable. In the exercise of Christian charity wefbrbeai to go into details. Charity coveretb a multitude of sina!. The bowling c* Levia; was . good, nine out of ten. of .tfie Foxton player's being clean" bowled; but the bowling of Foxton was. scarcely jip to the usual mark, ' It was a bad bowling pitch, however, and a hole provided somehow at each end of the crease did not conduce to the accuracy or success of the bowler. The game was played throughout in good temper and spirit, and was really most enjoyable. The visiting team were hospitably entertained at the Levin Hotel, and left for home again with cheers for their * conquerors about 5 o'cloctfc We append the scores : — Levin.— First Innings. . J.
