Famine in India.
Lord Curzon, Vicroy of India; reports that so for the famine has cost the Indian Government £8,600,000 - through expenditure oh food supplies and relief works. In his report the Viceroy thanks the colonies for their assistance in alleviating the sufferings of the inhabitants in the famine-stricken districts. The wheat crop in India, has, through drought, depreciated in value by ten millions sterling and the cotton crop by seven millions. , In the province of Bembay the agriculturists have lost fifteen mil- -\ lions in food ozbps Alone. • " <v^ ' Lord Curzon mentions that the efficiency of the relief measures adopted by the Government has resulted in the normal rate of mortality being maintained.
