FIRST DAY.

The meeting on Saturday was a most successful one, the numbers attending being in excess of anticipation when the drain oil the district of those attending the send off of the second contingent was taken into consideration. The Tram came in with a few under 100, and in half an hour was followed by the Feilding train which was composed of ten trucks and carriages. The public who attended in vehicles and on foot were many more than on previous occasions, as along the rails we counted over 40 conveyances. There must have been close on 1000 persons on the cqurse. The investments on the totalisator support this estimate as a sum of £8122 was passed through, which is more than was invested on the second day last year. The day was most pleasant, as though the sky was cloudy no rain fell until the racing was over, and then but a few spots until night when a very heavy rain was experienced. The privilege holders appeared to be doing well. The Foxton Brass Band played during the day and we heard many complimentary remarks about them, which were'certainly justified. The whole day passed off without hitch or accident or protest, if we except the two jockies being thrown, but as they were not injured a dislodgement from a horse is not anything of moment. The Officials, as they always do, worked .well together, and running a race meeting looked as simple as the art of shelling peas is said to be, simply owing to each person looking after his own work. Mr John R. Whyte carried out his duties as Secretary in his usual manner, and was ably assisted by Mr Angus Keith, as clerk. The Starter got his fields away, in all but one instance, in a first-class manner, and in the short races Mr Say well had his machine at work. The Judge, Mr Stevens, had some close work to decide upon some of the finishes, but there was no doubt expressed as to the correctness of his decisions. Mr Cummetfield, as Clerk of the Scales, carried out his duties most promptly and accurately. The course was in very good order. The Grand Stand enclosure has had some work done to it which has improved its appearance and usefulness. We hope to see a few other improvements carried out in the near future, one of which should be the erectton of a telegraph office, another, the enlargement of the Steward's room, and another, a new judge's box. Following are the results : — 1. Flting Hack Handicap, of 40 sots; second horse -to receive 5 sots from the stakes. Three-quarter-mile. Nomination, 108 ; acceptance, 203.
